Airdrie: The Churchyards of Airdrie, MI's:

Dolphinton Black Mount Parish Church is situated in Dolphinton Village at the junction of the A702, the main road from Biggar to Edinburgh, and the side road to Dunsyre. The cemetery opened in the late 1700's. The circular shape of the graveyard suggests it has been a religious site since early times.

Douglas St Brides Churchyard MI's:

This publication contains details of 455 inscriptions. Douglas lies on the A70 Edinburgh - Ayr road about two miles west of the M74. The old part of the village is to the north of the A70. This is where St. Bride's church and its churchyard are situated. Only the chancel and the ruins of the Inglis Aisle of the church still remain. The chancel houses the tombs of the Earls of Douglas and the plaques commemorating men of The Lanarkshire Yeomanry. In the bell tower is a clock, said to be the oldest in Scotland, dating from 1565.

Dunsyre Churchyard MI's and Mortcloths:

This publication contains details of Inscriptions of 65 head stones bearing 83 names. Mortcloths have 97 names. The parish lies in the far east of Lanarkshire. According to 'The New Statistical Account of Scotland, Vol. VI, Lanark' the church was repaired in 1820 and a Gothic tower was erected at the east end. It stands on a mound overlooking the South Medwin Water and is surrounded by the churchyard. The churchyard is circular, indicating an early religious site. Another link with the past are the jougs, or iron collars, fixed to the north wall of the church. These were used to discipline and punish parishioners.

Elvanfoot & Troloss Graveyard MI's:

This publication contains details of 237 inscriptions in Elvanfoot Graveyard and 3 inscriptions in Troloss Graveyard. This publication also includes inscription from the Navvies Memorial Stone in Elvanfoot.Elvanfoot Church is situated at the conference of the Elvan Water and the Clyde, on the A702 south of and on the opposite side of the Clyde and M74 from Crawford. The village developed as a road and rail junction with a branch line serving the lead mines of Leadhills and Wanlockhead. 'Troloss' is a private burial ground also on the A702 approx. 7 miles south of Elvanfoot Church. Troloss Farm is on the south side of the road and the burial ground is up the hillside on the north side. 'Navvies' Burial Ground' There are 37 Irish Navvies commemorated here who died during the building of the Caledonian Railway around 1840. It is on the east bank of the River Clyde beside the Telford bridge, which is on the A7076 approx. ½ mile south of its junction with the A702. There are 37 unmarked stones in a railed enclosure with a memorial plaque on a side wall. At present it is overgrown and is inaccessible but can be seen from the bridge.

Glassford Parish MI's:

This publication contains details of 320 inscriptions including those from new extension to the churchyard. The ancient burial ground of Glassford Parish is situated on the outskirts of the small village of Glassford, a short distance from the A71 Kilmarnock -- Edinburgh road between the towns of Stonehouse and Strathaven. The modern cemetery adjoins the churchyard and the inscriptions have been taken from both sites.

Hamilton Parish Churchyard: MI's:

This publication contains details of over 540 Inscriptions. The Church and Churchyard are situated in the town of Hamilton, It was built in 1732 by the 5th Duke of Hamilton, to the design of William Adam and is the only known Adam church in existence. At least 2 monuments made their way up the hill and into the new churchyard. One is to the men who fell in the Covenanting ranks at the battle of Bothwell Brig in 1679; and the garden referred to was Hamilton Palace garden. The men on the second were also Covenanters. They were captured by Cromwell's army at the battle of Rullion Green and executed at Edinburgh in 1666 for their part in the Pentland Rising.

Kirkton Churchyard (Crawford) MI's:

This publication contains details of 222 inscriptions. The ancient burial place of Kirktoun is situated north of Crawford and south of Abington on the west bank of the River Clyde. It can only be accessed via Kirkton Farm off the A702. The Kirk is thought to have been built around 1600 and is marked on Bleau's map of 1654 but shown as a ruin on a map of 1776. The farm is on ancient Church lands and was thought to have been worked by Monks. All that is left now are 2 interlinked foot high oblong ruins of undressed stone surrounded by the graves, some from the late 1600's. From the graveyard there are beautiful views over the Clyde valley and to Tinto Hill.

Lamington & Roberton Churchyard, Cemetery MI's:

This publication contains details of 594 inscriptions. Leadhills was at one time a lead-mining village. The mines closed about 1928. The old church and manse, both in one building, and situated in Ramsay Road, were pulled down in 1938. The former Free Church, and latterly United Free, built in 1883, became, as a Church of Scotland, the only place of worship in the village. It is situated just off Main Street. The burying ground is at the north end of the village, behind Gowanbank. The cemetery extension is at the far end of the burying ground

Walston Churchyard MI's:

This publication contains details of 122 surnames recorded on 121 headstones. The Churchyard is located on Oggcastle Road, Walston ML11 8NF. It is situated slightly off the main road along a small track. Within the churchyard there are some very old headstones. In 'The New Statistical Account of Scotland, Vol. VI, Lanark', the Rev. John Wilson wrote that the church was built in 1789 'which date appears on a stone in the north-west corner of the north gable, as also the letters M.P.M., for Mr. Patrick Molleson, the minister at that time. Immediately under this is another stone, inscribed with the letters M.T.L.M. and the date 1598; evidently preserved from a former building erected while Mr. Thomas Lindsay was minister.'

Wiston Parish Church MI's:

This publication contains details of 243 inscriptions of head stones of 138 surnames. The Church and Graveyard are situated on Millrig Road, Wiston, ML12 6HT, in the South Lanarkshire village of Wiston. The Church became independent in 1232 and was united with that of Roberton in 1772. The earlier Church was t-shaped with a heather roof and was replaced by the present gothic style Church in 1886. The graveyard is round and sits on a shoulder of high ground with steep sides on the south and east. An earthen embankment originally 6ft. high was made all round its outer margins. There are gravestones from the late 1600s to the present day. After the formation of a central parish at Glencaple Church, Abington, the Church and Manse were sold and are now in private hands.
