Any advice about how i can find out if and when a marriage took place. have tried scotlands people and family search, ancestry and genes to no avail.
The marriage was between James Mckean born c 1821 of Muirkirk Ayrshire and and Jennet (Janet ) Murdoch born c1823 of Old Monkland Lanarkshire.??

If your rellies were Catholic there would have been no notification, because at that time only Church of Scotland marriages would have been listed in the OPR at Scotland's People. They would have been entered in the local parish register, these are now at National Archive of Scotland in Edinburgh, but they are not avaiable on line only to view in person. You could ask at WWW.TALKINGSCOT.COM they are a site which deals in Scottish family history. You can ask if any one is going the archives to look for you. Apart from that sorry to give you the bad news.

I will do as you suggest and hopefully someone will look up for me...I would really like to follow up on my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents and trace further back

I am Molly Hamilton in Australia. I have paid for and received an extract from Scotland's People of the marriage between Alexande Hamilton and Isabel Lawcock on 9 June 1796. I would be grateful of some one on this Forum can tell me whether it is at all possible to get a copy of this Marriage Certificate. I am hopeful to get the names of Alex and Isabel's respective fathers and the name of the Church. All help will be very gratefully received. Thanks.

Hello Molly, I think you are unlikely to find a Marriage Certificate but from the IGI Isabella Lawcock was christened on 28 April 1776 at Glassford Lanarkshire and her parents are John Lawcock and Isabella Smith - she married Alexander Hamilton on 9 June 1798 at Avondale
Lanarkshre - 12 chidren are listed on the IGI -
1 Robert b 03/10/1798 Avondale Lanarkshire
2 John b 05/04/1801 Avondale
3 Isabel b 02/12/1802 Avondale
4 Alexander b 19/01/1805 Avondale
5 Elisabeth b 17/02/1807 Avondale
6 Barbara b 04/07/1809 Avondale
7 William b 04/03 1811 Avondale
8 James b 19/01/1813 Brownside Lanarkshire
9 Janet b 16/10/1815 Brownside
10 Margaret b 07/11/1817 Brownside
11 Jean b 05/01/1820 Brownside

It is likely that using the Scottish naming pattern that Alexander's father was named Robert & his
mother Elizsabeth.
Isabel Lawcock died on 27/12/1842
